![]() | April 16- Taiko Drummers In a return engagement, the Taiko Drummers, electrifying performance combines dynamic drumming and movement. Drummers Shiobara and Kato are seasoned performers of several types of traditional Japanese music including the Taiko drums, Shamisen (a three-stringed Japanese musical instrument) and Shinobue (Japanese transverse flute). Shiobara has won many Taiko competitions in his 22 year career, including top prize in the Tokyo International Competition, the highest Taiko drumming award in all of Japan, and has traveled the United States, Europe, and his native Japan performing colorful and exciting concert tours. April 19- English Dept. sponsored poets, Ekiwah Adler-Belendez (top) and Valzhyna Mort (bottom). Ekiwah Adler-Belendez Twenty-two-year old poet Ekiwah Adler-Belendez is from Amatlan, Mexico, a small village an hour from Mexico City. The son of a North American father and a Mexican mother, Ekiwah is a poetic prodigy whose powerful verses have mesmerized Mexico's literary scene. Born September 14, 1987, Ekiwah is the author of three volumes of poetry: Soy (I Am); Palabras Inagotables, (Never-ending Words); Weaver (2003), his first book in English; and The Coyotes Trace, which features an introduction by Mary Oliver. Ekiwah lives in Massachusetts, has dual citizenship, and is bilingual. He has a younger brother, Dhyan. Valzhyna Mort"A risen star of the international poetry world," declares the Irish Times, about Belarusian poet Valzhyna Mort, who is famed throughout Europe-and now the US-for her vibrant reading performances. Mort, born in Minsk, Belarus (former Soviet Union), in 1981, made her American debut in 2008 with a poetry collection Factory of Tears. Mort received the Crystal of Vilenica award in Slovenia in 2005 and the Burda Poetry Prize in Germany in 2008, and has the distinction of being the youngest person to ever be on the cover of Poets & Writers magazine. 7:30pm Spotts World cultural Building. April 21- SLAB #4 Literary Magazine Release Party The Sound and Literary Art Book is a nationally-released literary magazine produced by an undergraduate staff of creative, professional, literature, and other majors. The magazine publishes writers from the across the United States and throughout the world. In Spring 2009 the magazine will be showcased at the national creative writing conference (AWP) in Chicago. Each year it runs the Elizabeth R. Curry Prize in Poetry Contest. The judge for the 2009 contest is Kimberly Johnson--who is an NEA Creative Writing Fellow, and author of Leviathan with a Hook. April 22- Wacongo Dance Company The Wacongo Dance Company is a traditional ensemble of master drummers, musicians and dancers, residents of the Democratic Republic of Congo, who perform the ancestral songs and dances of Central Africa. WACONGO's artists have extensively toured Europe, Asia and North and South America. In its performances WACONGO explores music from 400 ethnic groups, including Luba, Mongo, Kongo, Mbala, Chokwe, Pende, Kuba, Mbunda and many more.
